    Couldn't find a thread about this --

    Starting August 2010
    • A chargeback will cost $20. (It was $10.) If you’re in our PayPal Preferred program, you won’t pay chargeback fees for your eBay transactions.
    • For full refunds, we’ll continue to refund the percentage (e.g. 2.9%) on each transaction but we’ll retain the fixed transaction fee. (Typically $0.30.) Pricing for partial refunds is not changing.

This is why if you're thinking about getting set up with a credit payment processor, you should talk to me first before dumping into paypal...

Well its like shipping, if an item was returned undeliverable- are you expecting USPS and UPS to refund you the shipping cost? I think the .30 cents is the fixed processing fee... its better of they can shoulder the fee though but if you are the owner of PayPal... would you shoulder the processing cost?

That's a little ridiculous, I'm glad I rarely have chargebacks; wish paypal would stop being such a fee bully.

Paypal probably just trying to inflate its already inflated balance sheet or is it the case of desperate times calling for desperate measures?

    No stronger,

Everyone needs to start finding alternatives NOW. I have been doing business online for many years and PP is nearing "Nazi" processor status. Their fees continue to increase. They have always been seller-hostile and buyer-friendly. If you don't believe that, let one buyer complain to them about something you sold to them. It doesn't matter if it's digital or hard goods, you CANNOT win, as a seller.

As far as I am concerned, PP is an 800 lb. gorilla though. That's why buyers (and thieves) love them. Unfortunately, until they have a mass exodus, they will remain number 1. But I sure wish there was a good alternative. I've tried nearly every service mentioned here and all have resulted in reduced conversions or sales.

This is unfortunate. A lot of businesses rely on PayPal already so I imagine many will not migrate to a completely different processor due to this.

Paypal works wonderfully. It just lacks in affordability and personal service. There are better companies out there, you just have to look for them. Convenience-wise, I could set you up with a device you put on your phone where you can slide the card through on the spot, OR take numbers in manually and process cards from your F'ing phone (US-BASED).

Let's get real here people - paypal is convenient because we've been using it for so long. Set up a sales or service page of your own, take orders via the internet and process 1,000's of times better with another merchant solutions provider.

I can also do gift cards, loyalty programs, business cash advance loans, check processing and debit so what does PayPal have on cheaper rates and more available services?

    Nothin'.

I doubt Moneybookers is any better... It's like pitting Democrats against Republicans... They're all doing the same thing anyway. Try something new and I bet it'll be both a learning experience as well as a gain in plenty of other, obvious areas.

    Jason,

You are saying all of the right things. The problem is that everyone else says them also. Here's what your single biggest problem is:

Customers know and trust PP and they buy most often for that reason. They don't care that the merchant pays top dollar to process. Most people are skeptical about buying anything on the web anyway. Why would I want to present my offers as well as I do and lose them on the sales page because they never heard of the processor?

As to the phone deal and not needing a terminal, that cards already been played. So that's nothing new. Hey, if you had the same customer awareness and recognition as PP, I would be one of your first customers. The problem is that I've tried other processors before and either my sales or conversion rates dropped when I did.

When you can get that kind of recognition and brand awareness, which is what PP has loads of, let me know.

Paypal is reaping the benefits of starting early and is now expanding... thanks to its own reputation. People wants to join because it has excellent customer base.. and so its customer base keeps on expanding. It is like a domino effect.
It would be hard for any competitor to replicate or challenge its dominance... unless Paypal itself fumbles big time!
