I just had a dollar sent to me ($1) and PayPal took .34 of it!

WTF! 34% of a transaction! When did they start doing this???

They have been doing that for a while. You are getting charged this fee as a way for PayPal to make money. It is based on a .30 USD + 2.9% fee for PayPal to PayPal account transactions, fees vary for international and credit card based transactions.

Sure, it works out to 34% when only receiving $1.00 but if you had received $100, the fee would have only been aboute $4.30 or 4.3%. Just about every payment processor I can think of charge both a percentage fee, and a flat rate fee for the same transaction.

PayPal fees are displayed on their website and you can see these fees even before you sign up for an account. It is not something new.

if money sender send as personal, then receiver no need to pay for paypal fees, but constantly using personal as form of payment to avoid paypal fees, will cause the sender account got investigated and later get banned as for personal abuse

Yes i too got shocked when first time i got payment 1$ and got charged as fees and i found that we can request the payment giver to send it as "Others or gift " so you wont be charged any fees.

Its been long time now that paypal take fees on personal accounts as well. In short nothing is for free unless you receive payment via gift (Personal transaction)
