Will the funds be frozen if I open a Paypal dispute with somebody ? Or will they be frozen only if I escalate it into a claim ?

you means funds in your paypal account or the account of other person? If so then funds in other person's account will be frozen for further investigation and clearance. Opening a dispute is enough!

Then you just open a dispute and paypal will take care of the rest. :)

Yes His account will be in negative balance and PayPal will follow his transactions and finally will retrieve your money from whom he had sent ;)

Nops. I won't agree with you here jimmy. This happened to me once when a scammer paid me got egold and scammed me and I made him pay me again for another exchange and then I transferred those funds from my PayPal to another paypal and even deleted that unverified Paypal. But after 5 days other guy (where I sent that money) got an email from paypal saying that your funds (same amount) is on hold and they finally returned him back. I guess that was because of Credit card payment or my account was unverified. Still confused that how the hell that happened :S

i dont agree with this completely..

i got scammed on ebay for a laptop(alienware laptop)for 600 usd and later i filed a claim...i got only partial refund saying that the scammer had only 175$ in his paypal..

so if it really goes into negative..and u know ofcourse to be an ebay seller..u need to have a verified account..so paypal could have claimed from his bank account..

but i didnt get the money back..just 175$

Yes, the funds will be marked as "Temporary Hold" by PayPal if you open a dispute or claim against a transaction.

Once the case has been resolved. It will change to "Reversed" or Removed" depending on the outcome.
