    yes.
    you can be charged $1 or any amount to see if the card is valid or if you have enough funds.
    some places charge a set amount and then when they get the final amount they refund the remainder.
    you will need your balance to be at least what the hold is.
    i don't know what the max holding time is,but refunds can take a day or two.

    To seek a Debit Card authorization hold in excess of the estimated rental charges. When using a debit card at Avis there may be a minimum hold of $500 and a maximum hold of the estimated rental charges will be placed on your account.
