I just opened a Personal account with Paypal. Recently, I received a few payments from DP forummers and Paypal is charging me a fee for these payments. I always thought Personal account is free. No?

I have checked the status of my account and it clearly stated PERSONAL. Could it be due to the source i.e. payer?

Not sure though. Maybe country? Or you might as well ask PP customer support to clear the issue.

I just checked my account. I noticed it's only for 2 payments. I looked into the payment details, it did not give any specific reason why there is a service fee for these 2 payments. Maybe I should just refer it to Paypal for clarification.

Well, that is not really a big issue anyways since the Personal account was never made for anyone to do business with. If you sell more than 5 times a year, you should seriously get a Premier or Business account :)

Yes, you can have a personal account + business/premiere(either of the two) account.

Yes, the Paypal TOS say you can have 1 Personal account + 1 Premier/Business account. You use the personal for your personal purchases and the business/premier to receive payments and use it for business purchases.

Remember to find time to read the Terms and Agreement and the Acceptable Use Policy because when you signed up with them, you are bounded by them.

What you are saying is that if I receive a payment from someone via credit card, I need to pay for the charges?

Yes, that is what I am saying. Because Credit Card Payments will incur a fee from the processing bank which may be anything from 2% to 5%. Paypal is not going to absorb that fee for you so since you are the one collecting the money, you need to pay the charges.

Click on Details for that transaction and scroll down to 'Payment Type' and if it shows 'Instant' the payment is from an existing Paypal fund and if it shows 'Credit Card' then it is funded from a credit card.

For the fees schedule, click on fees on the bottom of Paypal page http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside . It will show the fees.

Also with the Personal account, you can only receive up to 5 credit card payments a year. If you do not want to incur this charge, refund the buyer the money and the money and the fees will be sent back to the buyer. Click on 'Limits' to find out how many credit card payments you can receive.

Thank you very much all your advice. This is really helpful. I don;t think I need to seek clarification from Paypal anymore.

Like I said, if you do make more than 5 sales a year, you should consider using a Premier account. You will be paying a lot less in service fees and you can receive more payments too. Just factor in the paypal charges into your final price and you do fine.
