    Hi friends,

I'm a content writer from India. I hav started a paypal account yesterday. As I do not have a credit card or bank account, my account is still unverified.

Today I got my first payment from a US client via paypal. The first transaction was of $4. For this paypal deducted a service charge of $0.46 from this $4.. So my account shows only $3.54 now. They have'nt mentioned about such a high service charge (12.5%) anywhere in FAQ's and Fees section. What did really happen?? Is there anything wrong with my account???

Or is it the existing service charge (12.5%) of paypal to transfer money from US to countries like India...Anyone please help me..

    Thanks in advance
    Valentina gomas

This is true when you have a Business or Premier account.

There is nothing wrong with your account... You might have received this payment from credit card funds and not from cash balance, fees for which are unusually high! :(

It is a flat $0.30 for every transaction + 3.9%.

    In your case, it becomes $0.30 + $0.16= $0.46

Use this if you want to calculate your fees- http://www.rolbe.com/ppcalc.htm

that's just normal paypal fees, there is a cost of doing business. You didn't seriously belive that Paypal provided their services free of charge? Of course some one got to pay, and in most financial systems you charge the receiver, the seller, because often this person has decided way of transferiring money.

Using other options like "Send money as gift" only gives the buyer an option of accepting that the fee ends up on their account, i.e. giving you the full amount. But the fees still need to be paid, it's just a question of who takes the charge.

Paypal's fees are, after all, quite reasonable and they are very effective. So man up and live with it, there is a cost of coing business!

You should have asked your buyer to pay it as a personal payment that would have avoided fees

Well they do charge you fees for recieving payment , it is 30cents+3.9% , you can reduce the fees by requesting the sender to send it as personal payment.

Personal payment only means that the sender bears the cost. Or at least is given the option, a pre-checked box appears, that the sender agrees to cover the fee and it calculates the fee for you. If the sender unchecks that box, you still get charged for receiving. It's not like it's free to use Paypal, come on people!

Personal accounts are allowed to receive five payments without charge, or at least they used to be able to to. Don't remember if it was per year or if it was in total. Probably five per year. If you recived more, then Paypal would charge a higher fee than you would incur on a Premier account, but then you couldn't receive five free payments, but would instead be charged the 0.30+3.9% on each and every transaction.

So it's all depending on how many transactions you have.

^So you mean I can only receive 5 free personal payments per year?
    So that's why when a friend send me a $5 gift, there's a fee of 3 cents.

I got the money via "gifts" many times..Still changed me nothing...Maybe PayPal charges a small amount of fee on the very small amount transactions.

That's what I do. The buyer will just have to pay a small fee before they send you the money.
