i use authorize.net. in order to get the gateway set up, i had to set up a small-business account at my local bank and set up a merchant account with someone like RBS Lynk or related merchant service.

you first have to get approved and provide proof of business, etc. then i think there are some small activation fees, maybe $50 total. i get pretty good % rates on credit card processing and i think i pay $35 each month ($20 for the merchant services and $15 for the gateway).

it's really cheap, just takes time to get approved and get the paperwork done. so plan for three weeks for the whole process, just in case.
