I am thinking about hiring someone as a moderator on my forum in the near future. The only problem is that I have no idea what a moderator would get paid? Does it have to be cash? Could it be adspace? Any advice on hiring a moderator would be great!
Ask Crazy Rob, I hear they give him cheese to ease his Bears addiction. But seriously.. Most places (well in every case that I have been involved in), the mods do it for free, or web space, and other freebies... Not every mod need be paid in cash..
Oh thats good to know. Thanks! Ill have to start searching Hmmm... Crazy Rob must really like his cheese lol
Don't pay them - the job itself is rewarding enough for the type of people who make good moderators. Look at your most active posters, read through plenty of their posts to see if they're suitable and invite your most smart/fair members who are closest to and understand the 'ethos' of your forum. I dont think that paying mods is a good idea, some freebies are a better idea for such a job,the money can make them acting less enthusiastic
I was able to afford to give them a small Amazon gift certificate this year. I see nothing wrong with this.
Well mostly mods work voluntarily but in my view mods should get paid as they are spending some time (either helping you) to manage your forums. If not much but atleast something. Just my 2 cents
No need for payments ... if the forum is good and popular enough then giving the deserving member a "Moderator" status should be a very good gift for them ... atleast i do it for free
You can make the most active posters (who aren't disruptive) moderators. Most would be glad to be a moderator (for free). If you aren't paying moderators just make sure you have automated backups of your database taken at regular intervals depending on how active the forum is. Just in case a moderator's account is compromised or somehow falls into the hand of a competitor forum, etc & such eventualities.
I would advice to make an announcement of this on your own forum and then see for 30 days or so. The one who proves himself worthy of it can have the position or positions. I think a paid moderator is far better then volunteers.
My mods work for free and so did I in the communities I helped manage. They get a link on the forums right column that's there as long as they're mods. It's not a lot, but in the end it's traffic
