How do people feel about paying for low PR directories. for example, there are several directories that i can be listed on that require a fee, but the page i will be placed on has a low PR, 3. if i can find directories to be listed on with equivalent PR but does not require a fee, isn't this a better alternative?

That is much better. But, you should remeber every new directory has the potential to become a giant directory. Also PR keeps on changing always so PR may change later.

I sometimes do some paid listings with completely new directories. Directory submission should not only be aimed at achieving good PR but, also the most important thing is to achieve a good quality backlink.

Do both. Why do one and not the other? There are many good free directories out there, but good pay directories are a great value as well. I'll gladly pay a reasonable amount for a lifetime link on a PR 3 page, especially if the directory isn't too crowded.

the directory might not be crowded when you paid for the link, but over time might become that way.

how do people feel about listing the yahoo directory, submission fee is rather high, $299 per year.

also if the directory theme is relevant to your site's theme/topic, it might help you by providing you with relevant/themed incoming links :)

It is no different from any other directory .You can enjoy decent PR in most of the catagories and can get a strong backlink.

In general I think it as a complete waste of money. You can write several Press Releases for that amount of money. Much better in my openion.

I don't know about that one. I got to believe that THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS  could be better spent on other directories, link purchases, adwords, etc.

I only submit to small pay directories that I think have potential to grow substantially

Indeed. Don't really spend any cash on directories but I would if it isn't much and they seem like pretty solid sites.

If you pay for inclusion in directories you are paying for position. Many people won't pay any cent for one link. Thus you are adding your listing to less crowded directory.
Inclustion in yahoo for 300$ is very expensive but I have read somewhere that it can boost your listing very high. So I wouldn't say that 300 listings for 1$ is better than 300$ for one listing.
Yahoo directory can be seen for many search engines something like dmoz directory.

So, please enlighten us all as to where you read about this. (URI)
I too would like to 'read' about this and see 'fact based' feedback. Not just some silly SEO guy talking from the back of his neck.

    Thanks,

Adding to low PR directories is like a Future Investment, since the directories are currently of low PR but in future may get a high PR.

sometimes the low PR directory will charge more if they get higher PR in the future .

SO I will watch how progressive this directory is .If this low pr directory create their own link hardly , I will pay for it .But if a low pr directory is mainly for making some money only but do not do more promotion for them self ,even this is one dollar only I will not pay for it .

    nothing but argumentative speculation.

    The only thing i can agree with in reading all of those links is;
'if your competitors are there, then so should you be'

Everything else was nothing but worthless regurgitating drivel.

Being in there is just like being anywhere else. 1 link, 1 new IP.

That's my take on it. I am entitled to that, no?

how do you measure if they have potential?

here is the guidelines i have been using:

    1) Quality of inbound links. Are they putting their links on other sites and trying to promote their own directory? (sometimes i struggle with this because there could be thousands of links to a directory and to look through and read them all will take forever.)

    2) How populated is the directory. Are there going to tons of links on the page, or few? (the less links the better)

    3) Are there site wide links to: adult content, pharmaceuticals, debt consolidation or casino/gambling

    4) PR of main page, and subsequent page i will be ranked on.

is this along the same lines of whatever one else is doing? any other measrues i should be checking?

    gfriedm1,
You list of what to check for is good, although as far as checking PR of the directory, sometimes I will pay to get listed in a PR0 site if I think it has potential. How do I determine that? Well, I have bought alot of directory listings in the past and here are the things that I often consider when buying links in brand new directories:

    (1) Design - Has the owner has put alot work/money in design?
    (2) Category Structure - Does the dir have lots of cats, usually meaning fewer listings per page?
    (3) Advertising - Owner actively promoting his site? When I'm out promoting my dirs (both free and paid promotion), I often notice the same people promoting theirs.
    (4) Owner - Sometimes I know the owner. Is he/her the type to work hard on promoting this site, or not so much.
