I know there is a risk of not getting in if you pay yahoo directory's submission fee but it that the case for all directories that charge a fee

It depends from one to another, some are extremely picky about what they will let in regardless of you paying, others are a bit more lenient and some will let literally anything in as long as you pay.

I would say in most cases you can tell whether it is likely that you will get in before you ever apply. If you are selling a men's health product and apply to get into a travel-oriented directory, you should have your head examined. Yahoo directory is different in that it is often very difficult to determine whether you will get in or not if you have a borderline website.

Many of the smaller directories will refund your "review fee" if they don't accept you. Just make sure you follow their guidelines before you submit. I like to focus on the niche directories because they usually give more bang for the buck.

    Hi,

Yes, Yahoo directory charge $300 for reviewing the list. Whether you can get the listings or not but the money is non refundable. If you get the listing again you need to pay $300.

    Regards,
    Srinivas.

I my opinion to pay for directory submission is not effective now. Maybe except yahoo and DMOZ. Google do not pay so much attention to the links from directories like it was in the past.

Yes, like freelistfool said, most directories I know will refund the money you paid for review, if your link is not accepted. However, to guarantee that refund, first make sure the directory you're submitting to clearly states that. Or you can equally ask before submitting your link.
