Paying For Articles, The Legalities

Ive never really paid someone to write articles for a site. One thing that concerns me is the legalities regarding who owns copyright to the article. I would imagine it would always be the person who pays for the service owns the rights to the article, but when I see some article creation services producing articles for next to nothing one must question whether or not they are then selling the same article to someone else.

    Thoughts?

Always check with them first. Some publically say to offer the same article to 50 other clients, thus the low price. Others just use writers from low income countries.

Thanks for that, I figured that may be the case. I really cant understand that business model whereby you dont have rights to the article. If it's not going to be unique content why not just go to one of the many article distribution sites to grab content, unless of course you cant find info relating to your topic.

I recently bought some articles from a DP member, before the closing deal we discussed the details about the copyrights of the articles. After the payment I got my unique articles that are copyrighted to me.

A sugestion if you want after a job the copyright in writing: open a bid on e.g. rentacoder.com for a low amount for the person that wrote it. Let them attach the writings and close it. The standard projects have a writing in such is stated that you own the copyrights. In this way it is kind of registered with a third party. Legally not bullet proof, but it works enough.

It works with the people that operate their business by the same principle. I have seen it for the first time in another forum, where members' businesses is to sell their book/software/rights/whatever else eg. to the first 1000 people only, or where they sell resell rights etc. These people are certainly more open to purchase one of the fifty copies of an article, than the people here at DP would be. Different market.

The way I do my business, is that I write articles for other people. They receive all ownership to all articles. They can print them, sell them, or whatever.
I do not believe it would be right to write original content if you are selling the article to more than one person. Then the content is no longer original.

I try to keep my prices low, because if I have satisfied customers they will give me more projects to do and tell others about my service. When you have happy clients you have enough work to keep yourself busy and any other writers you may have working with you. The quality is still the same, just cheaper prices.

Honesty, integrity, and quality of work will give you a good working relationship where everyone is happy.
At least, this is how I believe. :)
