A really interesting SEO case study done at Search Engine Land gets into the particulars of seeking out and optimising for common synonyms, abbreviations and alternate words used in search phrases for a given niche (in the example, it's a laser eye surgery clinic, but the points and premises carry over to virtually any other niche of which one could think.)
