i don't think he's popular, I think he's respected/famous/slow news day. not like there is a war or anything good to cover.
Pavarotti did two things, to me: He continued a lineage that can be traced to Caruso - the mastery of technique married to a volcanic soul. He was an artist, plain and simple. Secondly, he brought this work to many who would never have come to it, very likely, without his desire to make it known. He is to be lauded for this.
