    Google.com shows 999,000,000 results.

You better have a good budget for this. :)

I don't know why you'd want to specifically rank for that. Not only will it be extremely hard, you'll get a whole lot of un-targeted traffic. People are after so many different things if they were to query 'party'.

Quite right. You should go long tail and target more specific terms like party supplies, party favors, "types of parties (birthday parties / college parties etc) " and create content that topically relates to the links you chase to make the anchor text of those incoming links relevant.

Yes, nothing is impossible but it would be better if you target a series of long tail keywords. 2 word to 5 word phrases can be targetted and it will bring good results in less time as compared to going in for the single word Party.

You can target the keyword phrases with the word party/parties in them and slowly you would automatically be targetting the word party/parties.

And its also a good word of advice from Mikesblank and Robert T.

its not going to be a tuff job as not much people are targeting for the party keyword. but still you will need a four digit budget on this i guess

This is a very common word. I would prefer using something more popular and specific!

wowzers well at least you have lofty goals, honestly it is way better to start with long tailed search including that word, build strong links and content and then go for shorter and shorter terms overtime. That said if you have the cash, perhaps you can make a dent. The best of luck cheers!!!!

Ranking for that word is like attempting to move a mountain.

From an SEO perspective, it is a waste of your time. Many of those single words, especially one like "party", are too broad and will have an awful conversion rate. What exactly within that category do you want to be known for the most? Whatever that is, is what your SEO project should be based on.
