Pakistan downplays alleged India airspace breach

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan on Sunday downplayed alleged Indian violations of its airspace, suggesting the weekend breaches were "inadvertent" and "technical," an apparent bid to avoid deepening tensions already spiked by the Mumbai attacks.

Pakistani officials said Indian aircraft on two separate occasions Saturday crossed one to three miles (two to four kilometers) into Pakistan over its section of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir and the eastern city of Lahore.

Pakistani jets chased the Indian aircraft back over the border, authorities said.

Such an airspace breach would be rare because both sides — which have fought three wars against each other — are careful to avoid them.

Indian officials on Sunday denied Pakistan's claim.

"There has not been any airspace violation by the Indian air force as has been alleged," said Mahesh Upasani, the Indian air force spokesman.

The alleged incident comes at a time of increased tension between the nuclear-armed rivals over last month's deadly attack in Mumbai. India has said the assault, which left more than 160 people dead, had roots in Pakistan.

Pakistan has denied any official link to the attack but has arrested some alleged plotters while demanding India hand over evidence to aid in their prosecution.

Pakistani officials on Sunday seemed keen to avoid flaring up tensions.

Pakistan Air Force spokesman Humayun Viqar told Geo TV it may have been a "technical violation" because fighter jets fly at high altitudes and may have crossed the border by mistake.

Pakistan Information Minister Sherry Rehman said in a statement that the Indian Air Force had told Pakistan the incursion was "inadvertent."

"There is no need for undue alarm," she said.

Whether this was a mistake or deliberate action, india should show some more responsibility and maturity. After refusing to share evidence with pak, these silly actions will do no good!

Look, people are talking about responsibility! Did the people from Pakistan (well apparently they WERE from Pak) think responsibly before killing 195 people on our side! Indian air force has been one of the most responsible air forces lately, and if at all they would have breached two-four kilometers of air space, pakistan would have shot them down without even thinking. You want us to believe that they breached into your territory and Pakistani army, which is sitting their like hungry hounds to get a sniff of the Indian army does nothing! huh! impossible
    PEACE

He has a point, if the Indian jets really did fly over the birder, 1-3 miles really aint all that much for a jet that flies 800 miles per hour at 28k feet......However, I agree pak would have shot them down. When a fighter plane violates your airspace, its pretty darn close to an act of war, and pretty darn good warning sign. How do invasions start? Airstrikes on key strategic assets. Please tell me you have studied history.

and I don't care what anyone says, neither India nor Pakistan want to go to war with eachother. MAD. Mutually Assured Destruction. Thats what happens when two nuclear countries get together and have a tussle. Especially when they are neighbors. Why are people afraid of putting their locations down? At least then we would know where your propaganda fueled hatred and arguments come from

lol the truest fact of 2008.
Even after Pakistan is close to bankruptcy these suckers, jerks, morons, & last but not least terrorists would back down from making false claims & wasting the money in fighting India.
Now even UK is openly saying that 75% of terrorists attacks in UK linked to Pakistan.
go hide your face & don't dare a pakistani come up here to comment on this, but I know these world class assholes wouldn't backdown from making comment on this.

South Asia-India= nothing left man! Get a reality check.
Pakistan- Check your own backyard and do not blame it on others
India- We need to beef up our own borders. We cannot do anything about terrorists until we check our borders ourselves
