I am tidying up some loose ends on an X-cart install, and my site stops responding... Warning: mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /usr/www/users/x/tp/gear/include/func.php on line 43 Warning: mysql_select_db(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) in /usr/www/users/x/tp/gear/include/func.php on line 47 Warning: mysql_select_db(): A link to the server could not be established in /usr/www/users/x/tp/gear/include/func.php on line 47 Could not connect to SQL db Code (markup): so I email pair and they respond.. I replied w/ and no one has gotten back to me. WHAT THE F? This is ridiculous... nothing I read about them told me their mysql abilities were severely crippled to the point that one user could max out the connections...
Hey, You need to ask them how to run the PHP scripts under your own username. That'll work better and allow the others to mind their own sites too. A friend of mine had a similar problem with pair too.
"I feel obliged to chip in here, and provide some feedback... I have used pair.com for a while, then switched to futurequest, and also used many other companies. On the budget-hosting end, my favorite is Micfo.com. They might have their ups and downs, but hey, it is budget hosting, and you get what you pay for. And, I think, Micfo is providing good service for the amount of money you pay them. BTW, I am dying to see what will come out of changes happening at Micfo. As for premium hosting, in other words: pair and futurequest. If your site uses mysql, and is getting daily pageviews around 5000, you CAN NOT use pair.com, PERIOD! In other words, you might be able to use them, but you will always have the risk of exceeding your limits, and you will be on the verge. Their database policy is very cruel, and it lets you use only 15 concurrent db connections. When my page was getting around 3-4K pageviews, I added some logging to find out concurrent users, and I had around 12 concurrent users at peek time at that point. I have to warn you about one thing though, # of concurrent users displayed on forums, nuke, mambo type of applications generally span over a 20 minute period, hence that is not what pair is talking about. Their limit is for number of concurrent users, users that are requesting db connections at the same time period, which is usually 1-4 seconds. And, as I mentioned above, you hit this limit (or get very close to hitting it) above 5K pageviews per day, especially if you have peak hours! Their hosting plans range from $17.95 to $49.95, and they are all constrained by this usage limit. When I asked them what the solution is, they said I should be getting a dedicated server, and paying couple of hundred dollars for a 10-20K pageview site did not make any sense. Furthermore, their advanced account, which is $17.95 is limited to 1500 queries per hour. Now, if you think about a CMS system like mambo, it sends about 20-40 queries per page, which is roughly 50 users / hour, which again is not reasonable at all... Regarding futurequest, they are expensive, very expensive. But, I can vouch for them without hesitation. If you can afford it, do not hesitate to sign up. Their service is top-notch, beyond top-notch I should say. They have comparable plans to pair, a bit more expensive maybe, but have no irrational limits like pair. I have been hosting a site which has about 7K pageview / day on their $17.95 plan, and had no db problems, or any problems what-so-ever. Their support is instantenous, and admins are pros I should say. The only problem I had with them was the lack of https for their control panel+webmail, and I raised this on their forum. Couple of people supported my post, and a few weeks later, they added this feature, which is a good measure of how responsive they are. Quote: because the hosting company is using obsolete hardware like Athlon 850 MHz and Celeron 667 MHz CPUs that are most likely at least 5 years old. I am sorry, but I don't agree on this one. I had similar thoughts before, and thought that this was the reason for pair.com's limits. For some reason, futurequest is doing the same thing. My site is on a "Dual Intel Pentium-III 850Mhz Processors" machine, and a shared database is hosted on "AMD 1330Mhz Thunderbird, 1 GB PC2100 DDR Memory", and I would think that it would be really slow. But, it is very fast and extremely stable. So, I guess they do not oversell these machines, and balance the load appropriately, so having such slow hardware is not a big problem for Futurequest. In summary, if you need premium service and willing to pay for it, then: - If you have a static site, or a site that does not get many hits, go with Pair. - If you have a real site, that goes beyond the limits I mentioned above, go with Futurequest. Hope this helps."
If it is a shared server on Pair they are very careful about resources. They will shut you down if you use to much. Their shared database servers seem to be a bit of a weak point also... Moved to dedicated and everything's been fine.
