I still don't get what's the difference? why do we have to bother to pay to just list in a directory? what's the advantage? we'll get more clicks? is there report that states that? thanx

mostly because alot of paid directories promotes heavily whereas only some free web directories promotes heavily.

so when you pay for inclusion you have to evaluate a site ... strength, potential etc etc etc

well, how do you know if they even promote your website heavily at the first place if there's no tracking? :-/ aren't they just going to add your site to their directories?

    Hello...

Free is free for a limited time... in most cases
as the old saying goes..... you got what you paid for...

Paid in most cases is knowing that a directory owner is putting back into his business and/or web directory and is well up to date (Technology) / (Services) and building that directories backlinks for a stronger web directory of tomorrow.

When a Link Directory offers YOU back a quality Review and several backlinks in return then in most cases it can prove to be very strong for advancing Your own websites positions in the search engine rankings and transferring its PR to your own site.
Usually speaking the more mods or effects it has like "deep links" "details Pages" "Backlink Counters" "SEO friendly urls" and great PR within the inside categories will prove to have been a worthwil venture in your own websites future. ;)

    thx

Paid directories tend to have higher editorial quality standards but not always. There are some good free ones out there as well.

Usually paid directories are of higher quality.
People get money from submissions and they keep promoting their directories with the money, unlike free directories.

Paid directories tend to have a much higher quality and owners spend a lot of money to promote them while only a few free directories can be considered "quality directories"

well, a paid directory naturally has more money for promotion, to check this just do a few google searches for obvious directory related terms

A free directory, well, if you where not being paid, would you spend money to promote other peoples sites ? hence, tis unlikely that a free directory will recieve any promotion

    Does Dmoz advertise ?

I started my directories so that I can offer FREE links for life. I don't believe in paid listing. I can add featured links and yes, they cost. But normal links are free and will stay like this. A successful directory is a HUGE one in my books. To become huge I need to add thousands of links and also to let people submit for free. I get my money from elsewhere :D

Go for both, free and paid.

I can only tell you in my personal (newbie, novice) experience that I was doing many free ones which did help in the rankings/traffic, but interestingly my traffic improved significanly shortly after I started paying for a few links.

Maybe it was a build up of the free ones, maybe the pay ones. I don't know, but I will continue to submit to both free and paid.

Not true. Free directories tend to get good money, if they are nice and good advertised, and if their owner is a serious person. I am saying this from my experience, since my directory did last month over $1500, and it is a free pr5 web directory.
Now, it will get to pr6 due the advertising, and will still remain free for all.
