Nearly 50 +- 10 members sign up on my forums (phpBB) and they don't post and must have website url in the profile. They all register with email domain of cashette.com

    This is professional spammers site.
I think i am being spammed by paid spammers.

    What to do?

i'd let them remain as users but edit their profiles to remove the url... ;)

start banning by IP address. Eventually it dies down. I've been hit by the cashette registrations as well, but haven't seen much in the last week or two (I'm assuming it's because of my ip bannings).

Also, IIRC, a lot of the IP's are from the asia/pacific network or amsterdam. If you're target is North American - I'm making an assumption :) - then banning entire swaths of IP addresses likely won't hurt you.

This is what I normally do. I will just go in and remove their urls. They never post, so it does not make any difference except paid your membership log.

In vbulletin when you pull up the user it tells you the ip address they registered from. IIRC in phpBB it doesn't do this, which as you noted, can be a real annoyance sometimes.

It's been so long since I've used phpBB, but does it allow you to disallow profile/signature access based on posts or usergroups? If so, don't allow members with 0 posts to have a signature/website

...that's not going to stop all spambots though...do you have image verification turned on? If not, turn it on...if you do, that's still not going to stop everybody. You could always require email verification...although that often discourages new members from registering and will still not stop all spambots - will help a lot though...you can even require admin validation, but this could become a burden on your part.

When it all comes down to it, this is all part of running a forum...and as long as you have a solid moderating staff behind you, it shouldn't become an overwhelming problem.
