Last year I did a few press releases through PRWeb and they were $80 each.

I've just gone to do one again is now its $170!

Anyone know wtf the happened? Am I looking in the right place?

Find a magazine editor with connections, and offer to write articles for them. (in exchange for...) Anyone who is a magazine editor knows where press releases are born, and can probably do you some favors. I discussed the possibility once for a magazine editor who offered me a senior technical writing staff position.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but you're the second person to say something like that today. As of this moment, when you go to add a press release, you still have the $80, $120, and $200 package options, and you still have the box below to enter a custom amount (they list $40 there, but I'm not sure how low you can technically bid at the moment - but at least as low as $40 for one star). Did you maybe look at PRweb Direct instead or something? Not sure.

Yes, $40 was available earlier today. I write/submit a goodly number of press releases for clients so I'm annoyed that they are changing this too.

What I'm talking about, is writing articles, and having an editor help you get your press releases issued, for nothing more than the time you spent to contribute to the articles. (they can do it)

This generally only works for niche areas, but it works pretty good when they're hungry for content - in my experience. (yours may vary)

I know about press releases and distribution... I run a PR firm. ;) I was talking about the comment on prices, since I'd checked them yesterday, and weren't anything like the increase posted (and they weren't the first person yesterday to ask about it). - and actually, my comments weren't even about your post... they were to the original poster. ;)

I have a question. What kind of news are PR worthy? I paid for a PR but it wasn't worth the money. Also is it worth to pay only $40 at prweb or at least $80 is a must? (or more maybe) ?

Upgrades depend on what you're looking for coverage-wise. If you can get on the home page, do that ($120 upgrade I think). $80 I believe puts you on the second page, so if you don't mind that, then go with that. If you're concerned with getting in Google News, Yahoo! News, etc. then do whichever level gets you there (not sure if $40 does anything extra for you, since PRweb doesn't example open up too much about anything but the packages they're pushing).

If it's truly newsworthy, your best bet is to submit to real newswires like Associated Press (and it's free - just email or fax it to the appropriate editor or bureau). If you'll send a lot of them, I'd suggest a service like PRnewswire.com instead, b/c membership will get you unlimited releases that you can post, as well as added benefits depending on what services you subscribe to.

It depends a lot on what you're trying to do, what your frequency will be, etc. You can get in Google News for free for example using www.PR.com, so if that's your concern, it's not worth upgrading elsewhere.

As for what's newsworthy, that changes every day. On a slow news day, you might get coverage for the launch of a new site if there's something truly unique about it. But if there's some major news going on in your topic area (from corporate corruption cases in the industry to political issues to war news), you might get no coverage at all. Without knowing your niche or what news you tried to publicize through your past release, I can't really comment on the newsworthiness aspect much. ;)

Thanks Jenn, you gave me a pretty clear view about Press releases.

Next time I make something newsworthy I will contact you ;)
