Paid Link. Will google penalise?

Discussion in 'Google' started by pinsanon, Mar 8, 2009.

I've been approached by a company to have a paid link on a website (not the blog in my sig). The link is gambling related, the site is gaming but not gambling. They only want ONE sentence, not a banner or button, and it'll be written to fit in the style of the page (almost as if I wrote it). It can't say "sponsored content" or anything, but at a push could say "related content" and not in it's own box or anything to distance it from the original content. I've never previously had anything sponsor related on the site.

It sounds like an awful lot of money for what they want, and I offered them my blog (more traffic), but they're adamant they want the original site (less traffic, possibly more established, was PR4, then 3 after last update).

BUT... does google frown on such things (does anyone even know?)? Only a low level of traffic comes from keyword searches, but I wouldn't wish to be removed from google completely.

    Any help appreciated.

    Hello...

But to answer your question ... Thats a PERFECT example of a paid link

A site not related to your content and gambling on top of it... Now if you "no follow" it then
your PR wont filter down to his site and his only benefit will be the traffic (which he dont want)

Ok its early in the morning...:p (nice link bait!)

    thx

Google explicitly prohibits posting paid links that pass PageRank in their Guidelines. Whether they notice this particular link and determine its a violation is impossible to say, but it is a risk to your site's rankings that you need to seriously consider.

I guess discussing it in public might not have been a good idea.

The target site is PR7 mine is PR3. I would have thought they were primarily after clicks. The money they're offering is a big price to pay for a small PR boost.

Outgoing links are completely within control and if you link to a site which is not relevant and belonging to a niche like gambling, Google will certainly penalize your site.

You won't be seeing desired results since your link will be from a non relevant website. I advise you against that. Just my 2 cents

If the offered amount of money worth the risk, then go for it..
After all, it's just a PR3 link and you can get the same easily ;)

Google will penalise if they found you selling link. However, if the link is nofollow, then it will be fine

You will get penalized for having a paid link like that. if you want to accept paid link then it must be relevant to your site.

You will only get penalized if someone actually reports you. Google is not smart enough to detect paid links on their own. If it's a large amount of money I would probably go for it. Discussing it in public may not have been the best choice though. Now if you proceed you have many people who now know you might have a paid link on your site. Those people could all report you if the chose to. I'd be surprised if a site actually got penalized for just selling one link though.

pinsanon, in the bottom of the main page http://www.pinballersanonymous.com/ a set of search phrases. Google will penalise you!

only if someone is reporting you,but why don't you try better to work hard and grow your backlinks in time so you will have success for a longer period,if you buy links and you will be caught, your whole work will be ruined in just one day.

Surely a banner or button that someone gets paid to show is no different to a paid link?

yes of course they are 1 and the same

also i think 1-2 irrelevant paid links will not hurt that much unless you overdo the thing.

Any kind of paid links that pass PR will get you penalized. Moreover there seems to be an automatic filter for gambling links so that even if no one reports you , your PR will automatically get penalized.

Well, you could try if you are ready to face the risk, but personally i wouldn't - anyway it's not worth it SEO-wise.
