Are paid directories worth it? Does anyone use their own money (not a clients money) to pay to get into certain directories? If so, what percentage of your budget do you use for this?

    Thanks

They're generally worth it, but you've got to do your due diligence, and ensure that your money is well invested.

Take a look at some of their existing listings. Are they correctly categorized? Are the categories full of spam listings? Does the directory give the overall impression that the owner cares about which sites they list, or are they just listing all comers without any care for quality, or relevance? Is the directory quality or crap?

Look at some of the sites the directory is linking out to. Do they have a good pagerank? Are they relevant, quality sites which deliver a good visitor experience?

As I said; the money paid to directories is an investment, and you need to ensure that it's a worthwhile investment.
