Pagination this is what its called in joomla. I post content to frontpage and after say 5 posts it will create a another page. At the bottom of the page it will have page 1, 2, 3,

Is this good to have on the home page of a site?

Purely personal opinion; I find that to be irritating. I would rather scroll down to follow the comments than have to get another page. I don't mind too awfully much if all posts on a subject are on a different page, but breaking the thread is a different matter, and not in a good way.

    cheers,

Homepage is a very specific webpage. We are not talking about homepage as a whole this time, so let's concentrate on the news.

Somewhere in the Net, there's a scientific report about number of newsitems on the homepage, which users are likely to read/scan at once.

It says that users read max. no more than first 8-10 short newsitems. So, It would be a good point to make pagination of all newsitems with 5-8 news/page, but simultaneously it should be as simple as it can be.

Personally, I'd rather do it in one of these ways:

    1) 5-8 news on the homepage + pagination of 3 pages with latest newsitems + link to the archive

    newsitem
    newsitem
    newsitem
    newsitem
    newsitem

    1, 2, 3... archive.

    2) 5-8 news on the homepage + link to the archive

    newsitem
    newsitem
    newsitem
    newsitem
    newsitem

    News archive.

    -------
Simplicity is the king and most obvious ways of doing something are the best.

Also remember, that Users hate scrolling the page! :D
Max. height of content (e.g. articles, very long newsitems) should be no longer than two full window screens - about 1000px - including header, navigation & footer.
That's one of the rules of creating functional websites.

There are no general rules to be applied when designing a website. A site's design should be matched with the site's nature. If it is more natural to read at once all the matter, then you can make the page as long as you need. There is no need of pagination in this case. But remember that the longer the page, the more time it takes to load.

I disagree. I believe there are many general rules to apply when designing a website

Behavioural studies have more than proved that
