    hi
on one of the sites i run we average around 1000 hits per month. it's a specialised scientific site and we are quite happy with these numbers: www.aware-project.eu. however the pageviews since january 2012 have sky-rocketed. for example the previous daily average was around 70. the highest pageview on one day with around 60 visits was 6500 page views!

this month so far the statistics are:
    972 visits
    576 unique visits
    53 851 page views!
    55 pages visited per visit!
    Bounce rate 8%!

I just don't trust the page views, pages visited and bounce rate statistics above. does anyone have any pearls?

    thanks

    c

    Hi Cal,

In your analytics click on the standard reporting tab, click on the traffic sources tab, click on to the referrals and see which sites are referring to yours. If you don't see a high number of referrals originating from another site then go down to the search option and click on the overview, followed by organic.

This will show the search terms that are bringing visitors. Perhaps you are suddenly ranking for a high traffic keyword, this can often happen overnight due to the fluctuations in the Google algorithm.

    I hope this helps.

Suggestion to also configure alternate free Analytics tool like Statcounter or Getclicky to know the actual scenario.

I guess the data is wrong, practically impossible, you can cross verify the same by viewing the stats in real time.

    Hope this helps :)
