Pages not password-protected in htaccess files requiring passwords

I have password-protected a few files in my main directory using htaccess. Overall, it seems to be working fine, but it worries me, because occasionally, for no reason that I can see, my browser prompts me for a password on a page that I have not protected.

Is this just a browser fluke? Usually when I go back to the page after surfing elsewhere, it lets me in without a password, as it should.

This is particularly worrisome because occasionally I'm incorrectly prompted for a password for my main index.php page -- so if this is happening to other people, I'm losing site visitors because of it.

    Thanks,
    Brian
