Pagerank: Why is my main page PR4 and everything else PR5 / 6

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Trend Hunter, Apr 28, 2006.

I am trying to figure out why my main page is a PR4:
    http://www.trendhunter.com

While almost all of my major subfolders and pages are PR5+:
    http://www.trendhunter.com/cool-hunting/
    http://www.trendhunter.com/galleries/
    http://www.trendhunter.com/become-a-cool-hunter-trend-hunter/
    http://www.trendhunter.com/about-trend-hunter/
    ... etc!

    Here is what I know:
    - My front page (www.trendhunter.com) has WAY more backlinks than any other page. In fact, most of the other pages only have internal backlinks
    - Every page on the site has at least 6 links that link back to the home page

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

    http://trendhunter.com/ PR1
    http://www.trendhunter.com/ PR4

    Thats your problem.

The solution is to put the following in your .htaccess file.

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^trendhunter.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.trendhunter.com/$1 [R=301,L]
    Code (markup):

Mad4 is on the ball. You can either do that, or if you have access to the apache config file, use something like

    Redirect permanent / http://ww.trendhunter.com

Your pages have the same issue but its not that thats affecting your PR - it looks like an issue arising from the fact your site has no backlinks in google.

Build a load of links to your homepage and it will get higher PR than the other pages.

    Trendhunter,

I think is a phenomenon of the recent PR update. It appears to me that pages that have indiscriminate inbound links are penalised over those that have more relevant links. Your home page is penalised whereas there is a filter that prevents this penalty being extended to your internal pages.

    Hi mad4,
    Thanks again.
I don't have .htacces file coz of windows hosting.
Also, pls explain ...build loads of links to your homepage...

    Thanks TrendHunter,
To avoid this I have placed home page link on links.aspx page.
    Is it a good decision??

    Thanks Mad4!

    1) What does this do:
    Options +FollowSymLinks
When I include that option, the whole .htaccess file no longer works....

    2) What if I AM being penalized for less relevant inbound links? Is there anything I can do?

Some servers need that line but some don't. Pick whatever works for you.

Build more relevant links and you will be fine. Its not the number of non-relevant links you have but the proportion of non-relevant in comparison to the relevant links.

This doesn't have anything to do with www vs non-www linking without 301'ing them to one location. I have about 10 sites that are displaying this same behavior. I don't know what this is happening either, but I know it doesn't have to do with www vs. non-www because all of these sites 301 non-www to www in httpd.conf.

I agree. I've seen a rash of these types of threads in the forums ever since 'Big Daddy' et al hit the Web. Not to dispute the advice given in this thread, which I think is excellent, but I think sometimes there's more to it than what we can control.

Steve your problem is a bit different, your internal pages are not linking correctly to the homepage so they are not passing PR to it.

Your link to the homepage uses the html code <a href="./"> but it should use <a href="http://www.ledgerservices.co.uk/">Home</a>

Although looking at the source I can't find the code for the left hand nav menu, how does the menu work to show text content to the search engines?

    Always use absolute url's.
