PageRank Not Hit - But SERPS Position Slammed to Oblivion

Discussion in 'Google' started by johnwerry, Nov 7, 2007.

I survived the Google PageRank hit recently but I have been pushed out of all the top 30 in many important keywords for my site. I have made recent changes, but none that I can point to as a culprit:

    1. added Blogrush (now removed)
    2. added meta keywords tag
    3. added a nav bar on the left, replacing same thing with simple links
    4. moved my reference book links (about 5 Amazon book links) from the home page to it's own "Reference Books" page.
    5. added "Delightful Blogs" chicklet
    6. tweaked some CSS formatting that looked bad in IE

I can't imagine what I did that Google dislikes.

    Hi there

When did u make the changes ?

How many places have u dropped ?

Had a look at ur site and it seems very good, cant imagine any of those changes affecting ur site too much.

Ive had it happen lots of times, just when your comfortable in ur position bang ur moving down again lol, i think its best not to panic at first and keep working hard on ur site, from my experiance my serps slowly returned.

I went from 12 to 13 to > 30 overnight on my most desired keyword phrase - "Victorian Furniture".

You've made a lot of changes all at once and who knows if that has made any difference.

One thing I noticed is that you have a lot of css on the top of you page. Put that in an external .css sheet.

The keyword "Victorian Furniture" is not highly competitive so adding too many links at once is not recommended.

You can try getting some deep links to your internal pages. The pages look supplemental so they are not passing any pr to the homepage.

Also ,add content to the pages on top of the ebay ads. A description of the funiture type, comments, tips etc would help the pages get crawled and add value to the site. I searched for your page and can not find any results in the top 300. MFA sites tank all the time and good content helps avoid this.

This has happened to me although the only changes I made was adding new news, rather painful going from getting 1,500 to 8 hits a day from google from a 500 page site :(.

This has happened to me before when I was getting around 500 hits from 300 pages and I got so annoyed I didn't touch the site for a month and the traffic and serps returned without me even being aware of it.

Don't get disheartened and keep plugging away with content and decent link building, they will come back and if you continue adding to your site traffic should also increase too. That's what I'm hoping too, could take a week could take a month but eventually they should return.

    Jon

    a note for the future.
Only make one major change at a time to your main homepage....or be prepared to possibly get booted from the serps for a bit until they realise what has happened!

Same thing happened to me after I made some major on page optimisations :( I got booted to P5 for a competitive keyword that I had previously been on page 1 of google for!!

Also, you MUST get some META descriptions added to all of your pages...its no wonder you are not ranking well....
and this term is not very competitive with only 250k results

Run your URL through this tool

    META validator

Dont be disheartened though....instead. Ensure all pages have META keywords (not so important) but different and RELEVANT META description (written for humans but including your keywords) is crucial to getting indexed well and ranking....

I would suggest you also purchase either IBP 8 or SEO Elite (software that will guide you how to improve your rankings)

Deeplinking and putting content on the internal pages is the answer.

When people say "deeplinking is the answer", does this mean deeplinking from myself (home page, etc.) or from other sites? You can only put so many links on your home page.

I had a meta description at one time and once it started showing up in Google, the clickthroughs went down. I got better click results without a description and Google choosing text excerpts to display in the SERPS.

I have WebPosition Pro. I wonder if this software sends url information to Google when it sends the queries. If so maybe Google slammed me for this.

OK, things have changed. I'm now back where I was. Strange how it dropped out entirely and pops back.

It's great that your ranking came back, but don't put your head in the sand.

Google is constantly tweaking is algorithm and it affects some queries positively and others negatively. Sites with better link profiles and quality factors are effected less. Analyze the more stable sites and look for links and other quality factors that can help improve your sie.

There is some discussion on Google on algorithm tweaking on another dp thread.

JMO but deeplinking helps keep pages out of the supplemental index and created a more natural link profile as opposed to all links going to the homepage.

An example of a deep link would go something like this. Furniture Auctions

Add deeplinks to blog posts, forum posts, social bookmarks or signature links.

    Same here ...

I have a two years old niche site with PR4 (unchanged), and my traffic dropped to the hell still at november 9.
I had a daily 4-5K visitors previousy, but I get only 900 now.

First I belived, I had a server downtime. But no. My google ranks dropped.
I found my pages on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th page by searching all of my main keywords.

What the HELL is going on at Google?

I never sell and never buy any links. No reciprocal links either, just quality links from quality sites.
I placed some BURST media banners a week ago on my site, but I don't think it is the reason for losing traffic ...

    I am really dissapointed ...
