Hi all, this is a newbie question  :

my friend wants to sell me a domain with PR 4 that he has used for a music website.
I would buy it but I want to use it for a News website.

Is important the previous topic of website ? Or is important only PR ?

    thanks

The domain name of a website should be directly related to the content of the site
regardless of what the pr is, the topic of the website is very important.

initially you will not phase any problem with your page rank, and stuffs like that. but the main problem will be, you will not be getting visitors coming through key phrases. so your traffic will go down ,. so i think both the aspects are important while choosing an old domain, as very few people comes to your page through direct url's.

u may change the theme of a site but obviously u ll not rank ne where for new keywords unless u do some link building for ur new keywrds although the previous site was ranking high for its keywords
plus if u change the theme..the pages providing a backlink to it (causing PR4)..will tend to delete their backlinks or make it nofollowed...so u will eventually lose ur PR too...it will b more like starting with new domain with PR0 n no backlinks!

so its not at all a good practice to change a theme of an established domain...moreover continue wid it n its a win win 4u:)

Previous topic is very important, because how did that website get ranked ? PR 4 rank is definitely given when the url is added in some good and relevant websites by the title of previous topic (music) and when any body will come to site considering it music site as well, and he will find your site a news site, he will definitely close it and will not visit it again. don't create bad impressions
