Say I have a website called

    carsforsale.com

And I want to create a market place in multiple cities

Do you think it matters on Google if I choose:

    seattle.carsforsale.com
    chicago.carsforsale.com
    philadelphia.carsforsale.com
    etc.

    vs.

    carsforsale.com/seattle.html
    carsforsale.com/chicago.html
    carsforsale.com/philadelphia.html

    thanks in advance!

Keep it plain html, you don't need subdomains. Unless they are all going to be incredibly stand-alone (as in they are very separate from each other), save yourself the trouble, Google doesn't care either way really, but html is fine.

Simply go with a subdomain if you know how to create a good inner linking structure within your own website, after all it's all about the links dude ;)
