What exactly is a unique visitor. If a site gets 30 million unique visitors in a month, does that mean that 30 million different people came to the site that month or 1 million different people came to that site each day for a month.

Yes, 30 million unique visitors per month means 30 million different people visited your site.

A unique visitor is a single individual who has visited your site while a page view is how many total pages were viewed by all visitors. If a person visits your site for the first time and looks at 5 different pages of your site that would be 1 unique and 5 page views.

The higher page views you have for each unique visitor indicates that your visitors are actually interested in your subject matter enough to stay and look through more than one page. If your uniques are the same or very close to the same as your page views it is an indication that you are not getting targeted traffic as they are not interested enough to stay.
