Everytime I think i understand page ranking I get confused.

Can someone please explain the following to me.

I have a website www.trackbikes.co.uk that has been around for almost 5 years

It has quite a few links to it (different engines show wildly different amounts)

one of the links is from a PR 5 page http://www.britishsuperbike.com/vsite/vnavsite/page/directory/0,10853,4857-137682-154898-nav-list,00.html

The site contains some useful information but the main page is only PR2

I recently built 2 other sites they have been live for around 3 months have very few links to them but they have PR3
    one of them is www.dirtydogadventures.com

Can someone explain why this is????

It depends where the links originate from when it comes to PR.

A single link from a good weight PR7 page can give the target page a PR6, which in turn can boost the pages the PR6 links to, to PR5.

It really comes down to how the pages are linked together and how strong the incoming link pages are when it comes to PR.

Also to add a little to what was just said. It also will depend on how many links you have going out and how much PR you are bleeding out of the site.

    Tommo,

This is not the root of the problem but you might want to consider putting a "track bikes home" link to www.trackbikes.co.uk on every page. This will help reinforce your index page PR.

Something else you may want to consider is doing a 301 redirect on trackbikes.co.uk/ to www.trackbikes.co.uk/ . trackbikes.co.uk has a PR1 but it shouldn't exist from a SEO perspective (unless you want to brand your site that way then reverse what I just said).

I know of a fantastic free classified ad site that you can post your bikes and events in (see my footer) :) . I do a rel=nofollow on the links for the free ads but since you're a DP member I'll remove them if you tell me what your account is so you can get PR credit.

And finally, you need to add links to your site from your DP account signature. These DP forum post links add up and help!

    Take care,

    Tommo,

Couple of other things I noticed:

    1. Go to this link http://www.trackbikes.co.uk/bikepreparationguide1.htm then click on the "Message Board" link (top right hand column). It generates a 404 error.

    2. While on this page look at the link for "News" It points to .com/index.html which has a PR2 and is also your welcome page. I would make that link point to ".com" and do a 301 redirect on .com/index.html to ".com" .

I've just removed the message board.
I think I am going to work on an upgrade to the site as over the past 5 years it's picked up a lot of crap.

    cheers

page rank depends on the links your page gets from other web pages
and page rank in getting less important as google is considering more factors these days.

    This actually demonstrates the problem

If I only take into account that 1 PR 5 site that links to me it should be enough for a PR3

I suppose I'll just put it down to google hating me!

Im quite sure that Google is not hating you ;) If Google hates you, your PR is zero. With the calculator I showed, it also shows that if you are on a website with 200 links, it doesnt gives as much anymore. Also make sure that its a STATIC link, not a dynamic link. If its something like /linkout.php?id=144 then it might not transfer the PR.
