Page already ranked can I add more pages?

I have a site that besides the contact us, privacy policy and terms of service there's only the homepage and one post, both are optimized and related. The homepage is on the Google's first page. If I ad more pages that's not quite as related will it affect my rankings?

No it will not have any affect your rankings....as each page is treated differently by search engines and the keyword for each page is optimized is also not the same....but to maintain your ranking you need to keep the keyword density of each page appropriate and you need to do proper link building.

I don't think it will effect to your ranking unless both of your pages are connected.
Search engines treat every page separately.
It's always better to have good amount of pages indexed in google, so i don't find anything wrong adding new pages to your site :)

    Good Luck

Thanks for the replies guys. I've been giving it some thought and I think it will affect the ranking if it differs from the theme of the site as they're all linked from the sitemap.

For instance if my theme was about training dogs and I put up a page on gps systems, another about weight loss products, etc. Google wouldn't rank it as high because it has a negative effect on the visitor experience for someone who's searching "training dogs". Kinda extreme, but you see the point I'm getting at, the pages should be very closely related at least.

    Thanks

You can add many pages. Those pages will also rank and gives you traffic. But adding more pages will not have negative effect on existing pages or rankings.

I don't think you are talking about http://acai-berry-health.org/ because it only has 5 inbound links listed at Yahoo! Site Explorer and all are from sigs on these forums. I cannot find where it ranks even in the top 100 results on Google.

But IF you are then because of the way the site is laid out currently you should be able to add other pages without hurting your home page rankings. Just don't modify the content on your home page other than to add an outbound link to the new page, and your home page's rankings should not change. Adding a link to another page will only slightly reduce the amount of PR you're passing the Contact Us, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policy pages.

I would suggest a couple of changes to your http://acai-berry-health.org/ site.

    1) You have duplicate content on your own site. Google has http://acai-berry-health.org/ and http://acai-berry-health.org/acai-berry indexed and the pages are 99+% identical to one another. I would suggest 301 redirecting http://acai-berry-health.org/acai-berry to http://acai-berry-health.org/.

This will get the duplicate page http://acai-berry-health.org/acai-berry out of Google's index.

    2) All 4 pages on your site have a Contact Us, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policy link in the footer. If a user clicks on one of them there is no navigation back to the home page. This is a bad user experience. Also this means that your home page is passing those 3 pages PR but those pages cannot pass part of their PR back to your home page because they don't link to the home page.

I would add a footer link on all pages (including your home page) pointing to http://acai-berry-health.org/ with the link text similar to "Acai Berry Home" or just "Acai Berry". This will provide several benefits:

    a) It will your users to easily navigate back to your home page without using the BACK button on the browser,
    b) it will help your home page's PR by allowing all 4 pages (including the home page) to pass PR to your home page, and
    c) it will provide your home page with 3 internal links with "acai berry" in the link text.

You have the same problems above with your http://what-are-the-benefits-of-taking-acai.com/ site. You have duplicate content at http://what-are-the-benefits-of-taking-acai.com/ and http://what-are-the-benefits-of-taking-acai.com/what-are-the-benefits-of-taking-acai. And are missing links in your footer back to your home page.

Perhaps this doesn't really matter anyway. The 2 sites both look like landing pages for PPC ads. If you don't care about the two sites ever ranking organically, ignore the above. :)

If http://acai-berry-health.org/ and http://what-are-the-benefits-of-taking-acai.com/ are NOT the site you're talking about and it is a blog where posts automatically appear on the home page until they are archived then YES adding a second post about an unrelated topic and having part or all of that 2nd post also appear on your home page could reduce your current rankings for your blog home page. But it will only reduce them to the extent that content on the page is influencing your rankings.

If your site's home page is ranking on page 1 then it likely has a decent back link profile with inbound links that contain the keyword / keyword phrase that your ranking for on page 1. It's those inbound links that are likely influencing your rankings the most. If that is the case then changing the content of the home page will not likely influence your rankings too much so long as the <title> and <h1> and all internal link structures and link texts remain the same.

    Thanks for the excellent tips.

No that's not the site I'm referring to, but yeah I forgot the link to the homepage  good eyes.

I have no idea what a 301 redirect is, but yeah I do want to avoid duplicate content so I'll definetely look into that.

No I'm leaving auto-blogging for other unranked sites. The sites I'm reffering to are only a little over a week old, and I know Goggle gives preference to newer site for a little while. I've had enough sites get ranked early and then drop off into the sandbox.

Inbound links? You mean I have some? Nah just kidding, I hadn't checked, but I'd imagine I put maybe a link or two from my other sites. I didn't try building any links besides pinging it and a few social bookmarks, if Google sandboxes the site I'd probably be wasting my time.

I'ts going to take me a little while to digest this (my brain is small)

    Thanks

Search engine ranks web pages not the whole website. Adding pages even if it is not related to the homepage is alright, there won't be no effect on other pages as long as it is not duplicate or crap content.

As I understand it, if you your home page links to 5 internal pages then the link juice that the home page has to pass to internal pages is divided by 5; if it links to 50 internal pages then the link juice that it has to pass is divided by 50.

I recently asked a similar question on a different forum and have now got my important pages linked with dofollow links from the home page; less important pages have nofollow links or are linked from a second internal page.

Right now the hompage only has links to contact us, terms of service, privacy policy and a sitemap. The first three are there for trust rank and quality score purposes, the sitemap so other posts can be found by the searchengines. The nofollow links are an idea, but does that mean you don't get credit for the links? If so that would be the opposite of what the links are there for in the first place.

On another note the reason I've asked about adding more pages is because a few years back the idea of creating tightly themed minisites that got ranked was easier than trying to create an authority site with hundreds of pages.

Of course the authority site with more pages would tend to have the chances of attracting more visitors, but it would take longer to reach the authority level then it would to build several minisites - you know, build one minisite and get it ranked then move on to the next and so on.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Since the main keyword I was targeting is ranking and doing well, maybe I should just leave it alone and move onto the next domain rather than "diluting" the theme. I seem to have more success with targeting a specific keyword or keyword phrase rather than trying to build an authority site. Of course, by doing this it kind of takes backlinking out of the picture for most sites, but I've had success without backlinks or age being a factor. It remains to be seen if the sites will get sandboxed though.

    Thanks

Expanding your website will NEVER hurt your rankings. To the contrary, Google loves bigger sites. Keep it original (content) and keep building links.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try adding pages on one of my ranked websites and see if it has any effects, from what I gather it won't.

    Thanks

Will this redirection solve the problem of duplicate content?

    http://acai-berry-health.org/acai-berry

It's a plugin I found on Google. Really, really easy to use (even for me, thank goodness)

    Thanks
