Owning Your Own server

    Hello,

My network traffic is out of control, I am tired of buying servers then getting jacked with all the addons (memory, disk space, ect...).

I was wondering if anyone purchased a server new from like Dell and placed it in a co-lo.

Is it economical, what is the co-lo charging, or is cheaper to just rent from the Planet.

    Any Help would be appreciated.

For just 1-2 server, it is cheaper to rent out.
However if you are planning to have multi servers later on, its betetr to colocate and its cheaper then.

Colocating will be cheaper if you are using big servers. And go with colo if you want to control your hardware. We started with leasing servers, but now, we own all our equipments. It allows us to choose which stuff we are using.

If you want to buy a server, I would recommend a custom built Supermicro. It's cheaper than Dell, meanwhile very stable. From some tests, it seems use less power too, that will save you money

It depends on where you want to colo. If you are going to colo one server only, it's from $50 to $100 for space and power. Bandwidth charges depends on the network setup in datacenter, which vendors they are using. Do you have any preferred location? What are you going to use that server? For normal hosting, or gaming?
