Over a million links - Is it possible?

I am new to this concept of SEO and link building. I created a thread in the SEO section and learned a lot from it. I would like to know if it is possible to get over a million back links in 2-3 years?

3+ million back links to be specific ...

Of course it is possible. A few years ago you could get a few hundred thousand without much problem using the DP co-op. Things have changed - it's not the number of backlinks, it's the quality. I rather have 10 links of my choosing than a million crap links. You also risk getting a penalty for having a bunch of low quality links.

Don't worry about the total number, focus on quality.

You need to have a quality links, try to get backlinks to your website from a website that has the same relation, if your website is talking about seo try to get a backlink from a websites that are talking about seo.

more quality links and quantity are the horse power to beat your competitors.

Getting a link is not a big issue. You may create 100 blogs and get it linked. But what you need is quality content on each blog.

Quality is much more important than numbers.

I disagree links is the way to go an not content you have static content sites that do better than the sites that add new fresh content and have a weaker link network than an established static content site with a fairly decent link network therefore build links and concentrate on content last.

Definitely don't over do the link building strategy do no more than 10-20 a week otherwise your site will look like spam!

Oh okay. Thanks for your help. I will not spam. If I get over 3+ million backlinks in 2 years (in my dreams, LOL), you said Google will ban me, right? What if I get that many links in 4-6 years? Most of my links are going be one-way.

If they are not natural links (and it doesn't sound like that is what you are asking) then you are going to be at risk no matter how many years you do it in. Google's algorithm changes all the time (over 400 tweaks last year) so no one can predict what it will be in six months - however, they are certainly relying on quality links from trusted sites and discounting or completely ignoring low quality links. A low quality link = sitewide links in many cases, footer links, link pages, free directory links, comment spam, trading links, etc. If your site trips their spam algorithm with too many links, it is never going to recover and the domain will be worthless unless you remove those links. For all practical purposes, it is going to be impossible to get that many "quality links" naturally (people giving a link without you asking).

Site owners have no say in who provides a link to their site, therefore I am of the mindset that Google won't necessarily ban you, those 'poor quality' links will just be devalued, or have no value at all. It is very possible to acquire many thousands of links in a very short period of time without getting dinged by Google; this was the case for a site of mine about 6 months ago, one of my sites was linked from a news article that was later picked up by the Associated Press, resulting in thousands of inbound links. Google noticed these links and my site got credit for them, of course these links related directly to my content and my site, so all was good in Google's eyes.

In conclusion, quality over quantity, always and forever.

Is there any free software that I use to find blogs/directories with high PR? Or, is there any website that gets updated everyday which lists high PR blogs, etc?

Cool. So, all I have to do is point 3 million links at my competitor and get them banned from Google?

    If it were so easy!
