Generally, if you're a male, you shouldn't have it on your lap at all, unless you've got something protective underneath it. The heat can fry the testicles if you get my point (they're located outside the body because the internal temperature at just over 30 degrees I think, is too high, so if you've got a laptop on them, its not going to do them too good).

As for it getting too hot, I'd just check the fan, see if you can hear any rattling noises when its expelling the air etc. It shouldn't melt, although it the plastic case starts to become soft, I'd start to worry.

My brother had a problem with his laptop, it overheated and melted some of the shielding on the inside. Since then both of us have coolers, little platforms that plug into the usb and use two fans to help cool the laptop. Either do that or keep it off your lap :)

My laptop has been on for three weeks, no standby, no restarts, no nothing. When I touch the bottom it is VERY hot, if it were to melt it would have already.

That's strange, you might want to check your fan and see if it's blocked with dust (I know that's the problem with mine when it overheads) you need to remove the dust somehow.. I tried vaccuuming through the fan area before lol

Well it sits on my bed most of the time so the fans dont do much. If I set it on my desk for an hour it cools off and doesnt feel warm.

Oh maybe the fan is blocked? Is it located on the bottom of your laptop? I know I always have to mount my laptop on something when I use it! Or else is heats up A LOT

Laptops after few years start heating up - and your fans start rattling. I have 4 year old Compaq Presario and when it's ON, I can hear the fan from 20 feet away. No alternative to quiet it - other then taking it out and placing my laptop right in front of Cool Air vent with constant cold air blasted on it. And as others have mentioned you are not supposed to have that thing on your lap for anything more then 30 minutes.
