Outside document root

Ok, I searched around for this but didn't really know how to describe it.

I am installing a php script on Apache 2.0 on Windows...
it wants me to create a folder for files outside the document root (htdocs) I'm guessing for security reasons.

I think on Linux this would be: /var/www/document_repository/

but on windows it would be (atleast for my system): C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\document_repository\

But this doesn't work, the script cant find the files... I think this might be because there are spaces in the address??

Now if I were to change the folders to contain underscores instead of spaces would this mess up my server? It's very important that my server doesn't go down for an extended period of time.

Usually I can solve my problems by researching, but I really can't find anything, any help would be appreciated, thanks!
