Outranking A Site QnA?

I just found a particular niche I'd like to pursue. The only thing is, the leading site is pr5, has around 2000 backlinks, 1 .mil links, 1 .gov link, and 43 .edu links. Would it be worth my time to actually try to outrank this site?

    Thanks,

    Damien

It is possible with enough effort. You can first find out where are the links come from and try to place your link on them also :)
