out going links?

Will it help or hurt my searchengine rankings?

I've heard that you should put the no follow tag to prevent link leakage, but I've also heard you should put links to authority sites because it will help your ranking. Which is true?

    Thanks

It's better to limit the number of outbound links to 20 (especially if they're sitewide links).
Do not use NoFollow on all outbound links. Just try to link to related sites and you will be OK.

I only plan to use about a dozen in my sidebar so it'll be sitewide. And I'll use Google to search for high ranking sites. That's what I thought about the no follow on outbound links to authoritive sites.

    Thanks

I personally don't think linking to authority websites will help your own rankings. If you link to 20 external websites sitewide you are just wasting your link juice. That link juice could instead trickle down to all of your internal pages. By linking to those websites you are helping them more than you. Only do this if it is done purely to help your visitors.

That's the way I thought up until recently, but recently several knowledgeable people suggested otherwise, visitor experience, trust ranking, etc. or something. Algorithms change (especially Google). Just wondering if I should try this.

    Thanks

it's good practice to put nofollow on the external links as it will prevent the portion of your PR from leaking to the other site. yes, but if you are giving external link to some authority sites which is very much relevant to the content of your website and your visitor also finds it useful, you will benefit from it. but remember to put the target="_blank" in the link.

Who says the rank will be better if we link to the authorised websites. If its true then there is very easy for the seo to rank better their websites. The external links on the website means the lose of page rank. So keep external links less and use nofollow
