Our website is ready for a review! Thanks.

After plenty of hours of slogging, finally we have our website http://www.SitesOnNet.com released and ready for a critical review!

This is basically a website directory along with rss feeds (in the front page). The site overall might not be aesthetically appealing (GUI design isn't our cup of tea :( ). But we have tried our best to provide it with all essential functionalities that will appeal to an end user (or so we think).

In addition to your critical review, we are also eager to hear about your 'First impression' , of the website.
    - Did it provide enough appeal for you to at least stay in the site for a few minutes?
    - Is the purpose of the website clear?
    - How is the speed at which the pages load?
    - How could we improve the GUI (again we are not good at it) and layout

Any insights are very much appreciated. Also please list your website to the directory and tell your friends. We will add it within 24 hours.

    Thanks a ton.
    The directory: http://www.SitesOnNet.com

My first impression of your site was: information overload.

I think you have quality content in here, but you could work on the overall website design. Maybe get the content re-organized... (you can refer to digg.com they have a nice organized clean layout and lots of information). I also think your site's logo needs work, it looks too plain.

i also think there is way to much info straight away (information inferno) perhaps more colour and pics would be good.

building a little more on it, you might want to try have a more so dominant element in the page, something that stands out more then everything else, then spread the information a bit more, hopefully this helps^

You nailed it right. I agree. As we observed in another post, seems like we are using the greedy approach when it comes to using the real estate page of the web page. May be less is more here?

Yeah, GUI design is my weakest link. Do you know of any standard tools to get this GUI thing going? I know there is this dreamweaver...but I am not good at it. All I am good at is coding (yeah, the nuts and bolts :) I know DIGG is a good looking one...but where do I get started if I need a layout like that? Any pointers?

You must have cleaned up the over-load thing --- not my impression at all. :)

You might want to center the categories ... and add a little color, even if it is only the background. Plain white looks cheap and uncaring. :)

Do you plan on populating this directory from DMOZ? Empty template pages usually get hit with a duplicate content filter. Search engines will not index them.

Requiring registration will stop most webmasters from submitting to your site. I would recommend you drop that requirement until your directory is populated.

    Get an actual design.

No color schemes, No graphics, no one is going to remember it.

It's very bright. I would suggest toning down the green and blue hues and adding some color to your logo to make it stand out more. I agree the white background is a bit much. Overall the site is easy to navigate and other than the colors it's put together very well.

You do really need a logo of some sort. iStockPhoto.com has bargin images - just browse and have a look - atleast it's a logo. My first impression was that it's boring. The purpose of the site is clear, but it wouldn't make you stay at it. If your not good at graphics, just get a template and modify that.

I think that it needs more content. Nothing turns a visitor off of a directory as seeing categories with 0's next to them. Before public launch, populate the directory. That's the biggest problem, IMHO.

Well, obviously at first, it's not exactly filled with traffic. In time, the categories will fill. The website layout looks promising though.

Decent site, little content, but that comes with it being new.

I would change the navigation a bit maybe a little less granular to the end user by click.

First impressions. Clean but nothing to grab hold of me and say come inside and look around.
    Navigation. Easy to get around.
Style. lacking in inpact needs more colour lacking a nice site logo.
CSS. not carried over to Firefox and Netscape.
Sign up and posting. easy to follow.
Overall. Great Functions but with room for style improvement.

This is the first time I have done a site review, I hope my comments will be usefull. the site functions as most do with nothing to drive users away, but does lack anything to really invite you to look around. I run my own UK based directory http://www.tradersreview.co.uk and I know theres always ways to improve the layout and functions, so I can't be to critical.

Overall style is very clean and uncluttered but lacking in a bit of colour. CSS is not carried over in Firefox and Netscape, remember not everyone uses IE.

Linking back to the site, lacking in choice in the number of links. Basics are there and function well. So this site gets a submission from me.

Good Luck for the future. :)
