It has an effect. People look at them as "crappy" since they're not sending as much traffic, but the fact is you're getting quality TARGETED traffic, which is the best. Most of these smaller SE's leave it wide open for you to get into top spots for impossible ones on google.

Everyone should be making 1 page sales pages and submitting them to these search engines. Over time you'll figure out the good stuff to do and you can completely dominate the SE.

For me getting your site listed in as many SE as possible is always a good thing. You'll never know where traffic might come from.

Frankly speaking it is worthless. Why waste your time to "dominate" a SE that will bring you no human visitor?

i agree with the commentators above, traffic from yahoo, live, ask, dogpile, etc can be useful enough and easier to monetize than google traffic. BUT! if you have a choice of optimizing for google and optimizing for the other ones... then go for google.

there's still a big difference between what google can do and what the others can do. if you CANNOT rank well in google, or your site is NEW, then you might want to try optimizing for yahoo and get traction faster.
