Hello! I am an ODP editor myself, in a category I work in.

I only post usefull sites and none of my own sites are in dmoz.

    Are there more editors here?
    Just curious :)

There are quite a few of us here, but not all [including me] use their editor name in public forums.

I've tried... for me the problem is that the things I know most about are popular categories and not a good place to start. I even tried regional, since I know my local area, but the areas I really know are too large. Every time I spotted a small category I might be allowed to take on, it worked against me because I don't really have specific knowledge about that particular niche. After several denied applications, I just gave up. I understand it's a difficult project to run, but it's hard to sympathize when I've offered to help and they just didn't want it. For those editors here, here's a suggestion - create some sort of program for people to help out - even if it's in a niche that they don't know much about and review there work before it's published. At least then, all of the wannabe volunteers can slim down on the number of people who've waited a year or more for a listing.
