OSX, definetly, even Windows 98 is better than Vista IMO. I work with computers and that is my job, so don't contradict em by talking about compatibility etc, just my view.

Macs don't get a ton of viruses though..thats a really good bonus to them..though I don't know if their system is invulnerable or if its simply because nobody bothers to write exploits.

I like the design of macs, but I find them very annoying to use.

    Give me vista any day..

btw: PCs generally only get viruses when your downloading from dodgey websites. Also the first time I used a mac it crashed.. so not the best first impression

Sorry but NASA and others either use Linux or Windows. I believe I saw an article the other day from Microsoft talking about NASA using their servers.

As I said for productivity Mac cannot compare. And graphics wise Windows offers the most variations.

MACs are great. They are extremely simple to use, fast, and powerful.

Vista eats up all your resourses and crashes every now and then as its way of saying "thanks!".

    BUT!

Vista/XP/Microsoft are better supported when it comes to games/gaming than MAC. This is the main thing for me that matters.

Vista + DirectX10 for gaming greatness > MAC with er.. iLife.

Also, if you have an XBOX360 theres lots of stuff you can do to connect it with Vista/XP. Whereas OSX is a little left out in the cold (although there is some connectivity available).

So. For gaming. Go with Vista

For graphic design and ease of use, also with really smooth and fast performance go with MAC/OSX.

My recommendation for a sort of "best middle ground" is currently: Stick with Windows XP.

I think because of DirectX10 it's better to go for Vista when you're a gamer. Otherwise OSX definitely rules.

Sorry guys, going to wade in here just because some of this is annoying.

MAC = Mac (a brand, ie. Apple MacBook, Apple iMac)

    OSX = OS X

I use a Mac mini running OS X v. 10.4, I'll be updating to 10.5 when it comes out. All this talk of 'PCs are faster' is just rubbish; all the computers that Apple make now run on Intel chipsets, which is what your beige box runs on.

This whole argument of buying Apple if you do graphic design and PC for everything is also just mythical. Apple have traditionally been strong in that sector, but you can run just about any graphical / video editing suites AFAIK (other than the Apple-owned FCP etc.) on OS X and Windows.

With regards crashes, I don't really get kernel panics on OS X but sometimes apps can crash. However, that's a problem with Firefox and not the OS. With Windows I don't really get many crashes either, but OS X does feel more stable.
You can run Windows on your Mac and if you can be bothered, you can run OS X on your PC.

The bottom line in my point is this, who cares? Use whatever the &%$£ you want.

xp so far seems like the best compromise, but its downfall is it GUI, which cannot compete with OS X or even Vista. OS X is making a run for the top but not enough people seem to be using Mac to make it viable.

Truly both OS X and Vista piss me off...why because of all the problems I get with vista and I never really got used to using OS X even when I had a mac so i have compromised, xp was the way to go.

I think the main reason why the Mac is successful in its own right is because Apple builts both the hardware and the operating system so there is no issue about compatibility. For Windows, the OS and hardware are not related and Microsoft would have to make an OS which can work with a wide number of hardware and vendors.

As a user, I do consider moving off to the Mac but as a software developer, I go where the mass market is and so far it seems that the Windows market is larger so I guess there is where I would stay.

However now that the Mac has migrated to the Intel CPU, it would mean that it would be easier to decide to move to the Mac as I can technically get the best of two worlds.

I think OSX is hands down much better than Vista - especially with leopard to be released. As far as hardware goes, I would say the only one worth the price is the iMac. Currently I'm using a PC, but I'm going to be switching to the new iMac very soon. My friend has one, and after using it, I simply can not stick with my PC -- it's getting old anyways.

I recently made the switch to apple with a macbook pro and I will never go back again...the experience, reliability....the fact that I don't waste at least 8 hours a week scanning, defragging and doing general maintenance....is a big plus for me....its not 100% crash proof but with the new intel processors it is a lot more powerful than my windows machine with similar specs.....

It comes with ilife which I can use to manage pictures and edit videos....stuff I would have to pay for with windows.....

but the killer was that most of the pro video applications that I used are not fully compatible with Vista....Vista is just XP with a lot of annoying prompts and more eye candy

I have a macbook pro running vista, and it runs it better than my alienware gaming PC. My vote is with mac, mac's can do EVERYTHING a PC can buy 10 times better. and you dont have to worry about virus's, keyloggers, trojans, etc on a mac :)

From experience I can tell you that OS X has FAR FEWER problems than Vista. Vista is the worst, I can't believe people are actually considering it a legitimate operating system. 5 minutes on a Vista PC and your memory will be gobbled up faster than a pizza at a weight watcher's convention. Vista is crap with a price tag.

OS X is blazing fast, organizes files logically and effectively, and doesn't eat your RAM. Best of all, there are 0 viruses on OS X, no joke. There was talk of mac malware a couple years ago... ridiculous. Oh, and the reason that OS X doesn't have viruses is because Apple actually makes a solid, streamlined OS, unlike Microsoft. Never need an antivirus on a Mac.

If THAT isn't enough, you can even dual/tri/quad boot a Mac with OS X and XP or Vista or any other version of Linux..

    OS X >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vista
