Are you allowed to take a oswd design (http://www.oswd.org/), convert it to a Wordpress template and then submit it to template directories with a nice little footer link or two?

The readme.txt in the oswd designs I have downloaded usually read something like this:
Released under the Creative Commons Attributions 2.5 license, i.e. you can do whatever you want with it provided you credit the author.

... I guess that translates to creating a Wordpress template from it is ok if I just remember to keep the original footer links and readme.txt.

    Is that correctly understood?

Yes from what I understood.. so long as you keep the footer links.
I don't know though if you can sell those themes, i think not.

I have downloaded templates from OSWD stating there is no copyright or being release to public domain, while others are ruled by the Creative Commons License.

Read the one attached to the template and yes, I agree wth cdotech regarding keeping the links up.

    Thank you for the answers.

I don't plan on selling them, only to use them for link building (much like the original designers do)
