I'm using zen-cart for my shopping cart just now. I'll vote for it because it's easily setup even though i have minimum experience in PHP programming.
Hi folks, I would prefer to go with Magento as it's the booming open source technology and becoming hot favorite for internet business communities. __________________ Magento Development
I do recommend Oscommerce for the following reasons 1. its free 2. easy to create template, you can hire me 3. easy to add contributions like friendly SEO urls 4. easy payment methods 5. easy to develop a website using these platform
Who said that ZC is not free? Who said there aren't a good selection of free templates? 1. Zen Cart is free as well 2. Not easier than ZC with an override system that oC doesn't have to make your upgrades easier. 4. ZC has a lot too. 5. Coming from oC platform not only it's easy to develop a website but the code is more up to date and the team is more responsive on the forums to help you out if you know nothing about it. That's because like someone already said, they have been longer in the market AND because many modules that come for oC are already on the original code of ZC, so no need to add the module. As you can see... I recommend Zen Cart. I develop ZC shops and I don't have a single customer unhappy with it.
zencart is free, but i find it much harder to configure with a custom made template/theme. osCommerce was easier for me to customize with custom graphics, layout...etc etc.
Zen Cart is Oscommerce retooled. However, the both totally stink really. The best is clearly Magento. It has a bit of a learning curve though. Prestashop is likely 2nd and very clean, fast and easy to use. You can't go wrong with either one. hope that helps, Nigel
Your right, zen-cart and oscommerce do (stink)... However, everything prestashop and magento have, you can do in OS commerce. OScommerce also has a great addon where you can write your own HTML layout and just type in the separate php parts for oscommerce. I find editing the theme/template in magento and prestashop really difficult and very time consuming. Remember time = money! and if you can design a shopping shop that looks identical to magento in OSCOMMERCE, then you just saved a lot of time doing so. unless I am missing something, if you know where I can find a psd to magento script, I will reconsider my thoughts here. BTW, here is the really easy to use script for osCommerce. http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1524
Well for Magento, it uses the MVC model. With this, the design is completely separated from the logic bits. Hence, you can actually design that stuff without module position restrictions or the php pumping out parts of the layout. http://www.prestashop.com/wiki/Themes/ http://www.magentocommerce.com/design_guide/articles/working-with-magento-themes In about 6 years of running an e-commerce consultancy I think I have seen one oscommerce site that did not look like oscommerce. There are also standards compliance, usability and a range of other things not addressed in Oscommerce. hope that helps, Nigel
I do not disagree with you at all. For my needs, osCommerce is by far too powerful for me anyway. I have about 20 items, that require the end-user to design their own image to purchase. The needs that I need, magento and prestshop were just way to powerful for it. I LOVE the fact that I can edit and move around everything/anything in osCommerce. the ease of making it look like my regular site is what i need. I designed my website first, and then decided to create a shopping cart. I always say, Magento is by far the best ecommerce out-of-the-box soluation out there. For me - it was just too powerful for what I need it for.
I would vote for ZenCart if you have to choose between the two. The people behind ZenCart seem to be more on top of things, not like OsCommerce.
I like zencart because they have good coding standards and they commented a lot of their code very well. I took zencart and stripped the code down to just what I would be using, getting rid of the high DB overhead. The fact is if you have a lot of products you are going to lag with certain functions enabled. I also did some major customization with it to include used products from 3rd party vendors in real time. Since zen cart is an off-take of oscommerce I imagine I could have done the same with OSC. Either way you go be sure to read their security sections on how to lock down your install. There has been more than one invasion into these shopping carts.
