Hello Guys,I am creating a new online store. We will be listing probably thousands of products. We are going to really focus on a great design and ease of listings. Could you please suggest the best platform for doing this. Thanks. Also any more details would be really helpful. Please vote in the poll since I will probably decide based on this!

If you are planning to open small online store then you can choose what these people suggested. However, if you want to develop big online plaza then Magento will be the perfect option, resources will be main issues but if you can handle it well then you will gain the power of flexibility of managing online store.

    Hi!

    web/technical consultant here..

For a good start of online business - I'l go to Oscommerce, although its simpler that other shopping cart solutions it remains the most popular open source ecommerce engine. - which means many of online store use Oscommerce. but...

If you are going to developed a huge eCommerce ()online store) website, I highly recommend Magento. For it is known to its large array of RICH FEATURES. Here are some of the features of Magento which other platforms don't have.

-Admin can edit products in Order
    -Multiple Product image
    -Graphic Template system
    -Multi-Store support
    -Coupons.

I would also suggest the free version of Interspire Shopping Cart.

It is called Interspire Shopping Cart 6.1.8 Service Pack(sp) 1.0.0

    This is a FREE version

If you got developers under you then go for Magento. Otherwise OpenCart, it's user-friendly, not so complex and more out-of-box solution.

Magento is great, until you try to maintain it. Yes, it is extremely flexible, however, there are serious implementation flaws.
    1) Every update causes major breakage to your theme.
    2) Documentation in some areas is still severely lacking.
    3) I'm a developer, and magento is a nightmare to code for. Things change so quickly that I implemented our own shipping and payment methods, but none of the tutorials worked.
    4) Each release ships with serious bugs. Sometimes, its difficult to tell if the problem is a change to the theming, or a bug in the code. Paypal here in Australia was broken for instance..
    5) There is no official upgrade procedure for new releases. When a new release is made, you simply try a generic one and hope for the best (it rarely works first time though)

If it were implemented properly, the XML system would have been fantastic. But because no regard for forward/backwards compatibility is made, it is simply another convoluted later.

Magento is great if you have full time developers, otherwise don't bother. It's popular because it comes with a lot of functionality built in, and has a enterprise / pro version with support. However, if you want to spend resources wisely, it is a timewaster..

We personally are investigating going "old school" and switching to Zencart, Opencart or Prestashop. A bit of CSS and addons can allow Zencart / opencart as good looking and powerful as Magento

I suggest you to go with Magneto.

As per your need for adding many products, this will be good for you and in terms of SEO also. Magneto is even easy to use.

Personally, in my true opinion, Magento is the best along with open cart.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

    Kind Regards,
    RTH.
