If you put original content on you site and someone copies it and puts it on their site, what happens?

I've heard that SEs ignore duplicate site - do the ignore the originator of the original copy?

Search engines try to make an educated guess at which one they should show in their search results.

If your page is important to you then you should contact the copier and ask them to remove your content. If that doesn't work there are other options but they involve a bit of your time.

Think about it, google displays more than one result. So even if ten pages have the same article they all get listed ;)

yes i think google removes the duplicate content these days... and this is always a big question/query that which content would be listed first... the maker or the copier

Actually, I have heard that one of the things Google looks for in duplicated content is relevancy(Jonathon Ledger has a report on this with a case study). In other words, lets say you have written something and I take your content and copy it to my site. You get 2 backlinks from that content but I get 10. Chances are great that Google will deem my copy of your stuff more relevant than yours and my page will get a higher ranking.

Also, another thing to consider is the Title Tag. If you don't properly use a title tag and I do, then, combined with the backlinks, I should rank higher with your stuff.

That is how I read it anyways.

Does this mean (hypothetically) I'd be better off not to create any original text just rip it off?

ALSO Has anyone reported something like this to google?
