What areas do you think are currently the most important in organically ranking a site?

I don't think meta tags are all that important anymore. I still optimize them of course, but the three areas that I focus on are:

    1. Title tag
    2. Keywords in URL
    3. Header keywords (H1, H2, etc)
    4. Content keywords

    So, pretty much everything ;)

I think a lot of people miss out on the importance of properly structuring your header tags.

I think meta description and keywords should be very concise and content centric ..avoid caps all the time. Header tags too plays a key role...along with your content's keyword density which is a must to watchout.

Personally, I focus on them in this order:

    Title tag
Relevant anchor text on inbound links
    Keywords in the URL
Keywords in headers on the page
Keyword density in the content of the page

I don't think your keywords Meta tag is really that important anymore...

First - Good Content w/proper onpage SEO optimization
Second - Marketing the Content/Site (PR, etc.)
Third - Links from authority sites first, quality sites, and then some directories
    Fourth - Repeat

Meta is not important for serp position directly. It is important to getting people to click on your listing in the serp. This in turn may affect your serp if more or less people are clicking through than what the search engine would expect.

Titles, headings, keywords on page (density but also keyword profile compared to other similar sites), anchor keywords and other link qualities are all very important.

I believe the average time on the page that people spend compared to it's competitors is a huge factor that everyone should explore. This metric seems a good way to assess content usefulness.

Title, headings, keywords on page... Some argue that keywords within the links or domain help too, i disagree with that simply because if some of your main keywords you want to optimize for are part of your websitesname, naturally they will appear at a higher level.
