One of my potential customers has asked about how many people he can be expecting to click on his site if he gets a top ranking in google (organically not PPC) etc or if he's in the top five. I realise that this depends on certain other factors but has anybody done any research on this or got any articles relating to it etc. Any information would be appreciated.
If you do a bit of research into the main keywords for the industry, and that you will be targetting the top spots for, then have a look at DP's keyword suggestion tool. That shows wordtracker and overture(Yahoo) searches per day for each keyword. I'm not sure about the ratio of Y! searches to MSN or Google searches but im sure someone here can advise. With all that info for each targetted keyword you will be able to get a rough idea of the amount of visitors. Obviously it is impossible to say very accurately how many visitors you will get but as far as I know the above is pretty much the best method, and the method I use when doing keyword research. The only other thing is contacting the people who are currently at the top of the SE's for your keyword and asking them although I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't divulge. hope that helps
Cheers, I have already done the keyword research for the selected terms etc and i've told him how many people on average are searching for those terms. What i don't know is average percentage click throughs for each position in SERPS. I realise that it can't be exact but i was hoping that there would be something i could give him. Thanks again.
ah i see, sorry - my mistake. I don't know what % of searches would be clicked through for a site at #1, I would conservatively estimate at 50%. That of course assumes that the title/description displayed is attractive and relevant to the search term. The amount of clickthroughs roughly decreases exponentially (if that makes sense) for each subsequent position but again depends on the quality and relevance of the information displayed about the site
Two points for you: 1) I believe (and have read others saying the same) that web users who came to your site through PPC ads are likely to leave your site the same way (through PPC ads). That's likely how they browse the net. Hence, expect decent CTR when you use PPC programs to drive traffic. 2) Having high rankings (high PR, industry authority, etc) means companies like Google will pay you higher than average per click as your site's authority is one of the main factors in calculating what an advertiser is charged (smart pricing algo). Hence, expect decent payouts with organic search if you rank well.
