I want to register a new domain and the only extensions available are .net and .org.
Which one do you consider as being the best choice and why?

I would probably go for .net. If you are not sure then register both and 301 the .org to the .net.

Is this necessary? I mean the .com is already taken, so what's the point of 301 for .org?

No one is going to type in the .org or the .net, so I agree the 301 is not necessary.

I prefer .org myself. Many more reputable sites run under .org than .net (ie - craigslist.org)

I guess the 301 would have been a good choice if all the extensions were available, but it's not the case. :)

I have used both .org and .net, it really depends on which you prefer. Personally I would go with .org :)

Get both, what is it gonna cost you now, really? Later, you might want to expand, or if the .com is available, buy that later. Get both, trust me :)

I just based my decision on price. Domains cost next to nothing, so having both wouldnt hurt the bank.

Personally, it doesn't matter. You can get them both to rank equally well.

change the name and get a .com. My web teacher told us a horror story about some company that registered a .net, put thousands into advertising and went out of business. Meanwhile, the .com company of the same name flourished because people would see the .net's advertisements. But people always tend to forget and type in .com out of habbit. I haven't registered a single .org/.net since I heard that. :)

    ArcadesStuff,

Being a domainer myself and having worked briefly for a registrar, my personal belief is that .com shall always rule.

Reason: We are conditioned to type in .com. When is the last time you typed in .net or .info?

...if you don't care about long term branding and have other items on your agenda for the name any other extension will do.

IMO, having a .org extension domain is more reputable than .net. it also has an appeal of being a respectable site.

Anyways it will really depend on what type of site you are registering, if it is for commercial use, if .com is taken I'd prefer using .net otherwise use .org for other purposes.

Change the name and get a dot com. Why lose visitors because of your name? I am sure that you have better things to do than working on making your visitors fully aware that it is a dot org, not a dot com. Even with that, some would just go to the dot com. It is really unnecessary.

If you insist on going the other way, get both the dot org and dot net. They only cost a few bucks.

    Good luck!

If you are flexible in changing the name then yes, do it and get the .com. If flexibility is an issue go with whatever TLD jives better with the name.

Good choice in getting both extensions. You don't want a competitor getting one of them in the future. In the future all the extensions will be used, just like .com. It's just a matter of time.

My personal belief is that it doesn't matter what extension you have for now.

If you are advertising online, they click on a link.

If you are writing articles, they click on a link.

If you want word of mouth, post your link for people to copy and paste.

If you have a business card, or you are advertising offline, you make sure that the extension stands out more. For example: .NET could be bold, and in red, and with a little picture of a net above it.

As for some people thinking that .NET, or any other extension makes the site look not as professional, it's the pitch, the presell that matters.

I have .FM. It will definitely work in my favor for what I do.

Can't get a .com? Who cares.
