    Hello,

I am interested in a domain name which is available under .org as well as under .cc. While I consider .org certainly as the more "official" TLD, I see .cc meanwhile as well recognised too and worry that .org might be seen as too organisation related (well ;)).

    Which would you choose? Thanks.

    .org no doubt.

Some webmasters wouldn't recognise a .cc extension, let alone your typical web user.

.org is a better name, unless it was something that blatantly wasnt an org, such as an 'adult' site.

Thanks, the question is what would be considered as being "really" an org. Although it wont be a commercial site it might later make money by advertisements and similar. I do not want to make a wrong impression by .org.

I think originally ICANN intended .org for charities and non-profit orgs, but its more generally used now.
I think its fair to use it to make a profit too, I would only be concerned about a site that misrepresented itself in the url as an org that was really an adult site, and someone could click by mistake.

I assume from your post that the preferred .com is not available. Traditionally, the .com suffix represents a for-profit site and the .org represents a nonprofit. However, there is no legal entity enforcing that.

As a .org website owner myself, my gut feeling would be to suggest that a slightly altered "domainname.com" that would still capture your purposes might be more descriptive than a .org. But realistically, it doesn't matter.

.org, its older firstly, more recognisable/credible. I think it is more accepted .org's can be normal organisations due to the limits on getting .coms nowadays. I wouldn't have any site with a .cc just not enough recognition.

now i haven't even heard of .st. Unless localised (like .co.uk or .com.au) generally you stick .com/.net/.org with .com being most preferential. Also if your domain for .com/.net/.org is all taken you might want to consider changing the name (especially if its really brandable and others running popular websites).

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

I cannot recommend .st's registrar at all. I had a domain with them for a while and one day it suddenly stopped resolving. After further investigation it became clear it was dropped from the root nameservers for some reason. Every contact attempt resulted in no answer, however when the renewal day arrived they eventually knew again how to contact me.

    I would go for .org

.org is treated as international domain by Google, where .cc will be given weightage on google.cc only

From what I have read, Google treats .cc, .ws, .tv, and possibly a few other extensions are treated exactly the same as ccTLDs because they are barely used at all in their home countries and are owned mainly by people internationally.
