Lately when doing some niche sites..I was forced to get the .org, because others were already taken, but I found them actually outranking .com and .net in many cases?? Anybody else noticing that or is it just dumb luck, because i've experienced it a couple times.
I really don't notice this trend yet. Might be you are doing good job with your website, this could be the only reason you outranked your competitors.
I've seen a lot of .org domains in SERPs. I doubt Google marks them down in comparisson to having a .com or .co.uk, so it is probably that you have just optimised your site better than your competitors.
I havent noticed a difference between the 2 to be honest, maybe suggested above you have done a better job of optimising your website or built better links to it?
